‘Big Brother’ backing down?

It was ridiculous when Washington ordered local governments around the nation to replace their street signs with supposedly more visible signs — at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars! Fortunately, “Big Brother” may be backing down.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said requiring the replacement of “perfectly good traffic signs” is senseless, The Associated Press reported. Now, the federal government might (and should) repeal the rule altogether.

Traffic safety is clearly important, and Washington is entitled to set policies on federal roads. But it shouldn’t impose costly, unconstitutional rules on local governments.
