Lee students present two Puccini operas

Lee University School of Music will present two one-act Puccini operas in four performances this weekend.

James Frost will direct the fully staged and costumed performances of “Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica),” a sentimental drama, and “Gianni Schicchi,” a comedy based on a story referred to in Dante’s “The Divine Comedy.”

“Suor Angelica” is set in a convent near Sienna in the latter part of the 17th century. It deals with the desires of the nuns and the conduct that sent Sister Angelica to the convent as punishment.

In “Gianni Schicchi,” a young man attempts a ruse so that he can claim an inheritance.

Both operas will be sung in English. Members of the Lee University Symphony Orchestra will play for the show, with Dr. William McNeiland conducting.

Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Dixon Center, 1053 Church St., NE, on the Cleveland, Tenn., campus.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for non-Lee students and children. Shows are free for Lee University faculty, staff and students. The box office is open 3-6 p.m. today and an hour before showtime. Call 423-614-8343.
