It’s time to grow up concerning racism

This letter is in reference to the article written in Monday’s paper regarding a father raising his daughter in a duplex where vandalism occurred.

Come on, people, this is 2010; a time to set “racism” apart from what is really happening in the world. Give this family a break.

It sickens me to know how many uneducated people exist in this world who treat people like this with such ignorance.

This is a free world, and we can choose to live where we want regardless of what races live around us.

The only racism I see are the ones who make it an issue. Try using this negative energy and turn it into a positive production in society and so much can be accomplished. We are not responsible for what history allowed to happen with our ancestors.

Read your Bible and you will understand that this happened way before our time … so give it up. You who practice racism cannot change what happened many, many years ago. You are responsible for your actions today. So grow up!

Is Marceaux better choice?

Basil Marceaux for governor. Attention Republicans and tea party activists. You have an opportunity to redeem yourself from that Haslam guy.

With Mr. Marceaux running again and obviously representing the highest and best thinking of your respective parties, just think of the wonderful opportunity which now presents itself. I see no reason he couldn’t have the endorsement of those (Free Press) editors of the Party of NO as their principles are so closely aligned. Maybe he could add that unemployed Rep. Zach Wamp person to his team, attract a horde of votes and thereby become the new REPUBTEA leader of Tennessee.

Parties should pay for presidents’ trips

In answer to a query as to whether the Democratic National Committee should pay for the use of Air Force One for President Obama’s “stump” trips, I would say yes, provided the Republicans paid for all similar trips their presidents made.

While we are on the subject, who paid for all those trips George Bush made from the District of Columbia to Crawford, Texas? Seems that he should have paid for them since they were primarily personal, but my bet is that we, the taxpayers, paid for them.

Don’t take away Confederate win

You printed a very timely editorial notice Saturday (Sept. 18) of the anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga. However, your main facts were terribly wrong and I’ll not try to correct them here. But I must say, the Confederate Army of the West won so few battles, please don’t take this one from them.

Clean up actions of your children

Since the 2010-11 school season has begun, I’ve heard and read several comments concerning the conduct of some of the students in the Hamilton County school system.

I’m a grandparent so I probably have a different opinion concerning some of the issues of some of the students and their families.

Sports, band, drill and cheerleading squads and ROTC all have a place in the schools. They help teach students to be competitive and to develop skills and good sportsmanship.

Our children witness provocative gestures and language daily, on television, in movies and music.

Cheerleaders should be screened on cheer/dance moves before performing in front of a crowd.

If they feel provocative moves are important, let them perform them in privacy and not where all ages are present.

Students shouldn’t be allowed to fight on buses, period.

I don’t care what your economic background, race or religion is, it’s no excuse.

Parents, stop bowing to peer pressure, clean up the language and the actions of your children.

Tell them no, you will not be allowed to talk and act like everyone else.

Children should be taught respect for themselves, their parents and all others.

Guess that sounds sort of old fashioned doesn’t it?

Do homework on airline fares

I am surprised you printed the reader’s letter (Tuesday) claiming that a Delta ticket to Orlando was uncompetitive at $849.40. Obviously, the writer had not done his homework.

I have recently purchased a ticket direct to Orlando on Allegiant Air for $183.87. I would say that is very competitive, and I don’t have to change planes!

Annexation leads to city ‘speed trap’

To the Chattanooga City Council:

A narrow strip of area on Mountain View Road above Ooltewah exit 11 (of Interstate 75) is annexed into Chattanooga. You folks obviously had every intention of setting up a “speed trap” for county folks to pay into city coffers and laugh your way all the way to the bank for resulting income deposits.

Well, the ticket I received for 53 mph in a very inconspicuous and newly identified 40 mph zone is infuriating!

Let me be clear; the different vehicles in our family will definitely do business in Cleveland from now on, using the back road over White Oak Mountain. The Chattanooga city merchants will be the losers by a 1,000 to 1 ratio over less than a year’s time.

Additionally, I revealed your “speed trap” to over a hundred people at a religious meeting, and they were very angry, too. Other alternative routes to county merchants are the stated reaction to you folks as well as Cleveland for those who live in Ooltewah. My $50 check is included, but it’s the last you will receive from us.

Do you understand Jesus’ message?

Readers’ letters keep insisting that we are a Christian nation.

I wonder … if Jesus ruled the nation, would it maintain a $100-trillion-plus military establishment directly employing over 3 million people and supporting and supported by a huge peripheral weapons industry? Would Christ condone the yearly siphoning of over $1 trillion of his citizens’ money to keep this military-industrial juggernaut well-oiled?

Would the Prince of Peace decide to use this war-machine to invade two weaker countries with shock and awe? Would he condone the use of robotic flying bombs that kill innocents along with foes? Would Jesus have killed a foe at all? What would Jesus do?

Remember that Rome, the nation that murdered Christ, was a mighty military empire. I fear that if Jesus returned today with his message of peace, we would have him nailed up again in the blink of an eye.

If you are a defender of our “Christian nation” and haven’t considered these things, you might consider if you have truly understood and embraced Jesus’ message.

Is war editorial revisionist history?

Your story about the battle of Chickamauga in the editorial page of Sept. 18 states that: “in the afternoon (of Sept. 20, 1863), the Union forces found a gap in Confederate lines and decisively surged through.” This is big news, since history recorded that the Confederates forces under Gen. Longstreet broke through Union lines that same day, routing the Union army, which then retreated to Chattanooga.

What is this; more revisionist history?
