Girls Preparatory School celebrated Friday with soccer star Keyle Snyder for her recent signing with Columbus (Ga.) State University, which reached the NCAA Division II national final last fall.

Snyder had committed to UAB during her sophomore year – with Samford also heavily recruiting her at the time, along with Middle Tennessee State, Austin Peay and others – but “had a change of heart” last summer.

GPS coach Patrick Winecoff knows CSU coach Jay Entlich well and suggested that program, and the university’s College ID camp happened to be coming up. She went, liked what she saw, and so did Entlich.

“We are thrilled to add Keyle to our recruiting class,” he said. “She has the ability to play multiple positions and is extremely versatile. Her athleticism will cause problems for opponents.”

Snyder, a former Best of Preps player of the year, had 28 goals and 24 assists the past two seasons under Winecoff for the Bruisers, who went 12-2-2 against TSSAA Division II teams during that time, with the 2014 state title.

“Keyle is the kind of player coaches love to have on their teams,” said Winecoff, who will get to coach her again this summer with the Chattanooga Football Club, “because they know when it has to get done she is going to give her all to get the win. It’s been great to watch Keyle develop as a person and a player over these last few years.”

Snyder plans to major in nursing, and CSU is building a new school of nursing in downtown Columbus, so that excited her along with the soccer program.

Basketball

‘ Chattanooga State swept visiting Dyersburg State in a TCCAA doubleheader Friday night, 95-81 in the men’s game and 85-62 in the women’s. For the Lady Tigers (15-12), Sydney Sims scored 21 points and Melva Sheppard had 20 rebounds with 12 points. Mia Collins also scored 12. Kiara Caswell had 22 points for Dyersburg.

‘ Lauren Ransom had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Bailey Charles and Emily Buck scored 18 and 15 points as Oglethorpe won 74-68 in Southern Athletic Association women’s basketball Friday at Sewanee. Bella Taylor made 11 of 14 free throws and had 27 points and five assists in defeat, while Jamie Chauvin scored 13 points and Corey Caulder grabbed eight rebounds for the Tigers. The Sewanee men won 72-61 and are 17-7 overall, 10-3 in the SAA. Keshonn Carter had 19 points and eight rebounds in the win, while Seth Brown scored 11 points and Cody Jones had five assists.

Baseball

‘ The Covenant College baseball team lost 12-6 to Huntingdon and 7-3 to Rhodes on Friday in the Rhodes Classic in Memphis. Trenton Nobles was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, Luke Harvey was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two stolen bases and Alex Kerr scored three runs in the first loss for the Scots (5-3). Against the host Lynx (4-4), Forrest Hunter was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and Perry Rigby homered and scored twice.

‘ Bryan College improved to 7-3 in baseball by winning 7-4 and 12-5 in home games Friday against Cornerstone.

Shooting Sports

‘ Soddy-Daisy High School junior Eli Christman was the high overall marksman with three top-three event finishes in the ACUI Lower East Coast collegiate clay targets tournament last weekend in Savannah, Ga., and he won the NRA $500 scholarship shoot-off.

The competition included 191 registered shooters and such universities as Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Virgina Tech. Christman won the sporting clays event with a 92 score out of 100, was second with a 93 in trap and was in a three-way tie for first with a 97 in skeet and finished third after the shoot-off. That gave him a 282 HOA total.

His high skeet score came despite 31-degree weather with 30-mph gusting wind and the sun in his face. Christman’s scholarship victory out of 37 high school shooters came from an estimated 85 yards, after he and two others were tied from the 26-yard line and then from 33 yards.
