Fast Facts about Seoul

A city of more than 20 million people, Seoul is also known as the headquarters to such brands as Samsung, Kia and Hyundai, to name a few.The city is known for its food scene, with a multitude of options ranging from live octopus to French cuisine to classic American barbecue. Many landscapes outside of Seoul are not unlike those found in Chattanooga — mountainous with scenic rivers and streams, Land said.

If you had told Lt. Col. Jay Land as a kid that he would one day be the commander of more than 550 soldiers stationed in South Korea, he wouldn’t have believed you.

“My mother earned every one of her gray hairs, that’s for sure,” Land said of his younger, rebellious years.

In fact, he acknowledged, even in his years in ROTC at Central High School, he didn’t take much seriously.

“I was more interested in girls and wrestling and was eventually invited to leave the program,” he admitted.
