Baylor sharing the load

Odds are that most softball teams competing in this week’s TSSAA Spring Fling have at least a couple of players with batting averages better than .400. Odds are also that each has at least one pitcher with an ERA below 2.00.

Baylor has defied the odds.

The Lady Red Raiders are one of six Chattanooga-area teams about to travel to Murfreesboro to compete for a state championship. Baylor’s first opponent at Starplex No. 3, where all Division II-AA games will take place, is St. Benedict at 1 p.m. EDT on Wednesday.

GPS, which split two games with Baylor during the regular season and shared the East/Middle Region championship with the Lady Raiders, is one of four local teams opening tournament play Tuesday night. The Bruisers play Pope John Paul II at 8.

Among the others is Class AA Meigs County (37-7) taking on Westwood (28-14) at 6. Class AA Central (27-10) and Class A Grace Academy (30-6) play at 6 and 8, respectively, at the McKnight complex against Covington and Trinity Christian – teams with a combined 88-2 record according to the brackets on the TSSAA Website.
