ROME (AP) – Amanda Knox’s ex-boyfriend says the American student provided alibis for him that he hopes will persuade Italy’s top criminal court to overturn his conviction for the 2007 murder of her British roommate.
Raffaele Sollecito told reporters Tuesday in Rome that the Florence appeals court which convicted both of them in January cited a memo that Knox wrote saying he wasn’t involved in Meredith Kercher’s murder. The 30-year-old Italian also cited a Knox text message that he contended would bolster his claim of innocence.
He wants Italy’s Cassation Court to dismiss his 25-year prison sentence and order a new trial.
Sollecito stressed he is still convinced that Knox, who received a 28 ½ year-sentence, is also innocent. Knox left Italy for America after being acquitted in an earlier appeals trial.
