Unite to wipe out pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is one of the nation’s deadliest cancers, with a five-year survival rate of just 7 percent. It is time to wage hope against this disease! I lost my mother and my grandmother to it.

To improve these statistics and to celebrate Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month during November, local volunteers for the Chattanooga affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network are calling on the community to join them in the movement to rewrite the future for pancreatic cancer and double survival by 2020.

Our community can participate in several activities this month, including wearing purple during World Pancreatic Cancer Day on Nov. 13. To learn more, visit www.wagehope.org.

Never before has there been a more urgent need to join the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, which offers the best hope to change the course for this disease. By uniting in solidarity, we can improve survival rates and patient outcomes!

Jasper Highlands story was biased

The article in Friday, Nov. 6’s paper regarding the dispute between Jasper Highlands and the Foster Falls Fire Department was biased in favor of John Thornton. It portrayed the community as uncaring. This is not the case.

This small, rural fire department serves 698 homes with only six volunteers who work full-time jobs to support their families.

The road on top of the mountain that reaches Jasper Highlands is not paved and is in poor condition. Reaching the community via the main road requires going down the mountain through Jasper and Kimball and back up the mountain via the Jasper Highlands entrance. Also, there is not a usable water source available in the community.

Mr. Thornton should have had his fire protection in place before he sold the first lot. The homeowners in the development are paying HOA fees, and it was unfair to have ever placed them in this position.

The fire department does not have the manpower or equipment to meet the needs of Jasper Highlands. Our mountain is a very caring community, but the department is simply unable to help in this instance.

VW was just trying to circumvent EPA

DDT is credited with virtually eliminating malaria and other diseases conveyed by biting insects. It has been tested exhaustively and has very few harmful side effects. Yet it was one of the first things eliminated by the EPA back in the 1970s.

Now the EPA is dictating low levels of CO2. The present level of CO2 is in the 300 ppm range. Plants just happen to be hurt considerably if CO2 falls much beneath this level. Plants grow the fastest at 1000 to 3000 ppm. Humans are not harmed at even this level!

Let’s determine to what extent Volkswagen was just trying to circumvent the idiocy of the EPA before condemning the company. Please pray the EPA comes over to the side of sanity before it cripples the world any more.
