President Barack Obama has struggled with a smoking habit over the years. But the first lady, Michelle Obama, happily announced recently that her husband has not smoked for nearly a year now.
We wish him the very best of luck in staying “on the wagon,” so to speak.
The president undoubtedly is aware of the serious health risks of smoking. And in his position as leader of our nation, he also surely realizes that many young people who look up to him may assume that smoking is “OK” if the president does it.
We sympathize with anyone who undertakes the difficult effort to quit smoking. But that effort is clearly worthwhile. And because of his unique position of influence, we wish the president particularly good luck in his ongoing attempt to avoid lighting up.
