A Traveling Tale

Last week, I wrote to another editor after drafting my introduction to that newsletter. “Would you mind taking a look?” I asked. “I’m a little worried – but these are things I’m doing and planned to write about.”

I was of course referring to the reason I am now sitting in the Nashville airport, a family vacation to Michigan’s Mackinac Island and Ohio’s Cedar Point, roller coaster capital of the world. It’s a repeat of the birthday trip my mom took me on last year, and which she booked immediately following for this year.

But many things have changed in the year since. Following last week’s draft, for instance, I was talking with another colleague about “beach shaming,” which illustrates two sides of the same coin regarding today’s social climate amid COVID-19.

It wasn’t the potential for judgment I was worried about, I wrote to my fellow editor, but the possible ammo behind it, that I could somehow instigate carelessness in the face of COVID-19.

We have always turned to writers for many things: to make sense of a situation or to escape the realities of our own, for example. I hope you understand this is nothing more than the latter. So whether from the beach or your bedroom, I hope you’ll tune in next week for the tales from my trip.
