University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football coach Tom Arth officially announced Friday the addition of former Crisp County head coach Shelton Felton to round out the Mocs’ staff.

Felton will coach outside linebackers, replacing Demarcus Covington, who recently departed for a position with the New England Patriots. Felton spent the last two seasons compiling a 16-8 record at his high school alma mater.

“We are so excited to welcome Shelton and his family to Chattanooga,” Arth said in a release. “Coach Felton has done an incredible job at Crisp County and has been around so many great coaches and programs throughout his career. He has a great presence about him that our players will instantly recognize and respect.”

Felton was a defensive lineman at Troy (then Troy State) from 1999 to 2002. Arth called Felton “the type of coach who will get the best out of each player he interacts with on and off the field.

“We could not be more proud to have him on our staff and know that he will make a special impact on our program.”

Garcia resigns from men’s tennis

After 16 seasons coaching UTC men’s tennis, Carlos Garcia resigned Friday.

He coached both programs for two seasons and has been solely the men’s coach the past 14.

During his time, the former Tennessee standout led the Mocs to two Southern Conference tournament runner-up finishes. He leaves UTC with a record of 154-208, which included a 64-37 mark from 2005 to 2008. The Mocs were 5-17 overall and 0-7 in SoCon play this past season.

The search for a replacement is expected to begin right away.
