Who in 2012?

This is the year 2010. There will be a major presidential election in November 2012.

Is any presidential election not “major”?

Any serious candidates must “show up” very soon.

It takes a couple of years for anyone, even if already in public life, to gain sufficient “name recognition” and raise enough money to make an effective presidential campaign.

Who will the nominees be?

Of course, President Barack Obama is “in,” is well known, and will be seeking a second term as the Democrat nominee. But he is faring poorly in current popularity, after just a little more than one year in office. The economy is down. Will it pick up? There are other problems. Will President Obama gain popularity, stay at less than 50 percent in approval — or fall? Only time will tell.

But there’s an old and true saying that “You can’t beat somebody with nobody.”

So that invites this question: Who can be an effective Republican nominee to challenge President Obama in 2012?

Who wants the Republican nomination? There is no shortage of Republicans who would like to be president. But who could run and have a real chance to win?

Who has the stature, the character, the principles, the name recognition, the personality and all else it takes to generate real national enthusiasm enough to have a chance to win against even a weakened President Obama?

OK, whose name comes to your mind? Is there any name that just leaps out to you today?

Who should be the 2012 Republican presidential nominee — and have a real chance to win?

Well, there’s not much time for a really able challenger to emerge. Most of the familiar names are shopworn and have faded in the past. So who will be the 2012 Republican presidential nominee?

Several people will try. But success will require much more than desire — and lots of money.

Whoever may have a chance to be elected in 2012 over President Obama had better “show up” very soon. Lightning is not likely to strike.

Will President Obama get an easy run to re-election in 2012? Or …? Who?
