GATLINBURG, Tenn. – National Park Service officials say a plan for new facilities to house the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont is environmentally sound.
An environmental assessment has found no significant impact on natural or cultural resources from the proposed improvements.
Park officials chose an alternative that would upgrade existing facilities.
The estimated cost is between $5.9 million and $7 million and funding would come from public and private sources.
Tremont offers residential educational programs that foster ecology, cultural diversity and stewardship and nurture appreciation of the park.
