The Stringer’s Ridge Tunnel was closed Wednesday night to repair the drainage system in preparation for winter.
The overhead drainage system in the tunnel on Cherokee Boulevard has been leaking water onto the roadway for at least a year, said Jennifer Flynn, spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
“[We] want to make repairs before it gets cold,” Flynn said on Wednesday.
Last year, cold weather caused ice to form in the tunnel, and TDOT officials hope these repairs will prevent that problem this winter, she said.
“We don’t want to deal with that [ice] again this year,” Flynn said. “We are trying to get ahead of the game.”
