Why backpacks are back

The word “backpack” calls to mind the black-and-silver JanSport embroidered with daisies and my initials that I rocked through middle school until suddenly, it turned into a hideous and embarrassing accessory I refused to carry with me – in spite of the fact that meant I had to carry an armful of heavy textbooks throughout high school.

But nowadays, there is an abundance of stylish options that won’t leave you deciding between what’s chic and what’s comfortable. Enter the rucksack, a stylish and slightly more compact backpack.

A mini backpack may not sound groundbreaking, but it may be one of the most practical style trends of our time. Need a bag big enough for your Nalgene bottle as well as your day planner? A pack small enough to transport work documents without them getting lost, but big enough to also fit your iPad? A rucksack is your perfect solution.

Really, they are the adult version of that daisy-covered JanSport designed to pair well with that perfect summer dress and ready to be toted everywhere from the office to your first date.

Whether you’re looking for leather, embroidery, stripes or a more grown-up version with the same flower power, there’s a perfect summer-to-fall bag out there just waiting to be slung jauntily over your shoulder.
