Sturdivant plans return to Georgia

Georgia redshirt junior offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant has decided to return for his senior season.

Sturdivant was a Freshman All-American in 2007 but tore his left anterior cruciate ligament during preseason camp in 2008 and again in the ’09 opener at Oklahoma State. He was eased into playing time this past season before assuming a starting role Oct. 9 against Tennessee, which was the first of seven starts.

“I came to Georgia with high aspirations and was a part of a team that immediately won a Sugar Bowl and was ranked No. 2 in the nation at the end of the season,” Sturdivant said. “This last season is not how I wanted to end my career. I want to be part of a team that gets us back on track and plays for a championship.

“I also think I can improve my draft status and continue to work on finishing my degree, which has always been important to me and my family.”

The 6-foot-5, 312-pounder from Wadesboro, N.C., is among several Bulldogs juniors who have been debating whether to leave early. Place-kicker Blair Walsh said after the Liberty Bowl loss to Central Florida that he was returning, and Sturdivant is the second to announce his plans.

Receiver A.J. Green, outside linebacker Justin Houston, guard Cordy Glenn, punter Drew Butler and cornerback Brandon Boykin have yet to make their intentions public.

“We’re obviously excited with Trinton’s decision,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “He’ll be an important part of our team and will also have an opportunity for some individual recognition as well.”

Uga has lymphoma

Uga VIII, Georgia’s English bulldog mascot, has been diagnosed with lymphoma. He is responding well to treatment, according to a university announcement Friday, and is expected to continue appearances at athletic events as his health allows.

He missed the Liberty Bowl because of a gastrointestinal condition, and further diagnostic tests revealed the more serious condition.
