DANDRIDGE, Tenn. – Interstate 40 westbound has been reopened at the Interstate 81 interchange in Jefferson County after an early morning crash.
The Knoxville News Sentinel said the Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed one person died in the single-vehicle crash early Tuesday. A tractor-trailer truck loaded with watermelons jammed under an overpass and burned.
For a time, the crash closed lanes on both highways. Police were able to get one northbound lane of I-81 open not long after the crash that occurred about 3:30 a.m.
The westbound lanes of I-40 remained closed until bridge inspectors deemed the overpass safe for traffic. The newspaper reported some concrete was damaged and there were burn marks on the bridge.
The name of the person killed was not immediately released.
