They say truth is stranger than fiction. But among at least some environmental activists, what passes for truth is stranger still.
Bolivia, run by left-wing President Evo Morales, has put together a draft U.N. treaty that would extend to “Mother Earth” rights equal to the rights enjoyed by human beings.
“The South American country wants the UN to recognize the Earth as a living entity that humans have sought to ‘dominate and exploit,'” Britain’s Daily Mail reported.
Among the “rights” that would be guaranteed to Earth would be the right to “balance,” whatever that may mean exactly, and “the right to continue vital cycles and processes free from human alteration,” the newspaper added.
Earth “is in permanent balance, harmony and communication with the cosmos,” the proposed treaty states.
