Good taste triumphs at Apocalypse

The Apocalypse is, in common definition, the ultimate climax of good over evil. The Apocalypse in Fort Oglethorpe can define itself as a restaurant that overcomes mundane fare and brings good taste to center stage.

THE MENU

Wraps, hot subs, pizza, calzones, pastas of all kinds and salads, too, make up a complete menu that offers a taste for everyone.

The order (for two): Sausage spaghetti with Greek salad ($7.95); veal Parmesan with spaghetti and Greek salad ($9.95).

It wasn’t until after I’d ordered that I saw a note on the menu advertising the fact that the pizzas – all made from scratch, including the dough – have won several awards. I considered ordering a small one as an appetizer, but knowing the propensity of restaurants to serve oversized portions, I feared an appetizer would fill me up, so I decided to forgo the pizza. Keep pizza in mind when you visit, though. The Mediterranean with gyro toppings sounds excellent.

The salads arrived a good 10 minutes before the entrees. Chilled stainless-steel bowls were filled with crisp fresh lettuce, shredded Parmesan, tomatoes and banana peppers, all tossed in a mild herb dressing. It was an excellent beginning.

As expected, our pasta dishes filled the plates with spaghetti cooked perfectly to the al dente stage and topped with our selection of meats. The sausage had a nice blend of spices to blend with the tomato sauce and grated Parmesan. The ground veal patty in the other dish was sautéed and topped with a blanket of Parmesan cheese and tomato sauce. Both entrees were the kind of Italian comfort food that makes you happy.

The menu has an expected range of Greek and Italian specialties. There was nothing gourmet, but everything we tried was fresh and good.

THE SERVICE

I noticed just one server handling the whole dining area and one cook in the kitchen. Even though we arrived for an early dinner, there were several tables already occupied. Our waiter, though, was able to serve all the tables with amazing patience. This is not a fast-food restaurant. Food is made to order, so the wait is much as you would expect. It took a few minutes for dinner to arrive, but the wait was not overly long.

THE SPACE

The Apocalypse is a small shotgun-style restaurant in a shopping center along busy Highway 2. It’s a clean, modern-looking restaurant, but I will say the comfort level is a little on the hard side. There are no cushions on chairs or booths, so unless you have a well-padded bum, you may find yourself shifting position from time to time.

THE VERDICT

I really enjoyed my meal at Apocalypse. From the looks of all the folks coming through the doors, it appears that this is a restaurant the North Georgia town has been waiting for.
