Former insurance executive and longtime Republican party stalwart Phil Smartt, 72, was named to the Erlanger hospital board of trustees Tuesday by Hamilton County’s legislative delegation. Smartt replaces Dr. Phyllis Miller.

Smartt, a graduate of Brigham Young University, headed Phil Smartt Insurance in Chattanooga until selling it in 2011. He served for eight years on the board of trustees of the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute, six years on the Hamilton County Board of Education, and 12 years as a director of the Water and Wastewater Treatment Authority of Hamilton County.

Smartt was a founder of the Pachyderm Club, a local Republican group, and was involved in Mitt Romney’s campaign in 2008.

He said he was pleased with Erlanger’s recent return to financial health.

“I think they’re going in the right direction,” he said. “I just want to keep them going in the right direction.”
