Under the theory that dogs and firehouses go well together, entrepreneur Liz Fortanier will open the Choo Choo Dog Camp in a former fire station on Chattanooga’s Southside this fall, according to Jeff Jennings, spokesman for NAI Charter Real Estate Corp.

“This was originally developed in 1955 by the city as a firehouse, and it’s stood vacant for some time,” Mr. Jennings said. “It is exciting to watch an entrepreneur recognize a business opportunity and at the same time revitalize a building that has significant history to our city.”

Mrs. Fortanier, who obtained the property at 25 West 20th St. through a series of exchanges with the city, plans to have the business up and running in early October.

She said she will offer special VIP suites for pets in the building’s old offices, which will offer amenities above and beyond regular kennels. She also will offer traditional kennels, and play areas inside and outside for the animals.

“The inside is going to be open and accommodating for the dogs, and people will have an option to put them in a regular kennel or a VIP suite,” she said.

Work crews began demolition last week, and began removing walls, old ceilings, theater-style seating and other remnants of the 55-year-old building to pave the way for canine occupants.

“I’m going to have special flooring made out of recycled tires that’s very beneficial for their joints when they run and play,” Mrs. Fortanier said.

She also will have a retail area with leashes, collars and toys for man’s best friend.

“We’ll start with boarding, and grooming for now, but eventually I will expand,” she said.
