This story is free to read.

Syria and the pointless U.N.

There is no real doubt that the government of Syria is brutally suppressing a popular uprising against that Middle Eastern nation’s oppressive leaders.

But the horrifying events in Syria highlight once again the complete inability of the U.N. to deal with such situations.

Nearly 4,000 Syrian civilians are believed to have been killed by the Syrian military and other government forces as they have protested for change. There are documented, grisly cases of even young children being tortured and mutilated, presumably as a warning to the Syrian public that the government will go to any length to maintain its grip on power.

All of this has been clearly known for several months.

And yet what is the bureaucratic U.N.’s latest attempt to deal with the situation? It is issuing a report commenting on the atrocities taking place in Syria.

That’s tragically unsurprising. Remember: This is the same world organization that oversaw the multibillion-dollar “oil-for-food” swindle when dictator Saddam Hussein was in power in Iraq.

And even more to the point, it’s the same U.N. whose supposed “human rights” panel is regularly filled with representatives from some of the must cruelly repressive nations on earth.

The United States is certainly in no position to stop the brutality taking place in Syria, and we have not claimed that we can. But it is perilous business for the Syrian people or the people of any nation to depend on the incompetent and often corrupt U.N. to rescue them from horrible circumstances.
