Schools across Walker County were dark Friday and will stay that way every Friday for the remainder of the summer.
The system moved to a four-day work week in an effort to save energy and money, Walker County Schools spokeswoman Elaine Womack said.
“On those energy-saving days, all of our facilities are closed down,” she said. “None of the offices or schools will be open, so we save on electricity, everything.”
Ms. Womack said all coordinators, directors and administrators still can be contacted since they’ll have their laptops, but they won’t physically be in an office or a school.
To make up for the eight hours of work time lost on Fridays, system employees will work four 10-hour days, she said.
