Luke List’s approach shot on No. 16 bounced on the green, then rolled into a bunker.
His tee shot on No. 17 hit hole high, then rolled into the middle of a swale that separates the front of the green from the back.
Those were the bounces the former Baylor School and Vanderbilt star suffered in the second round of the Chattanooga Classic on the Black Creek Club course he grew up playing.
“Disappointing is a good word for it,” List said. “I hit some shots that I thought would turn out good but didn’t, and that’s the summary of the day.”
List shot a 1-over-par 73 and dropped from a tie for fifth place after the first round into a tie for 37th, nine shots off the lead.
“I feel like I can shoot under par in my sleep out here, and not to do it is frustrating,” List said. “If I have an opportunity to make a few putts tomorrow, I’ll do it.”
List made two birdies and three bogeys during his Friday morning round, which put him at 5 under for the tournament.
“I need a low round tomorrow to get myself in contention,” List said. “If I can go out and shoot 65, I might be in good position.”
Amen Corner light
The holes lack the beauty and history of the real Amen Corner in Augusta, but three key holes on the back nine could play a pivotal role in determining the champion this weekend.
“Those are great holes,” Jason Gore said. “I really like this place, and those are tough holes to get through.”
No. 12 is a 458 yard par-4 with an approach shot over a hazard. The average score there Friday was 4.29. Then there’s the hardest hole on the course, No. 13, which is a 485-yard par-4 with a front-to-back sloped green. They’re followed by the easiest hole on the course, a 526-yard par-5 that is reachable in two for all but the shortest of hitters.
“If you can get through those three at even [par] or 1 under on the weekend,” said Ted Potter Jr., “you’re going to have a chance.”
Historic cut
The cut to play the weekend was made at 3 under with 63 golfers shooting that or better in the first two rounds. It’s the highest number in the eight-year history of the tournament.
Those who missed it include Michael Clark II of Dalton, 2006 Chattanooga Classic champion Kyle Reifers, Bryce Ledford of Ooltewah, former Tennessee Tech golfer Scott Stallings, Gibby Gilbert III of Valleybrook and PGA Tour veteran Len Mattiace.
High school helpers
Hixson High School athletes from a variety of sports will be among the standard-bearers over the weekend. And Baylor School students will be handling the official Twitter feed of the Chattanooga Classic – in English and Spanish. They’ll all have easier jobs than McCallie freshman Case White, who caddied for Marco Dawson.
