Defense paces Rams victory

With its offense struggling to find any consistency, Tyner’s defense again picked up the slack to lead the march toward a possible District 6-AA title.

The Rams forced three turnovers, scoring touchdowns on two of those, and for the most part shut down Red Bank in a 28-7 win Thursday night at Tom Weathers Field.

“We’ve played pretty well defensively all year,” Tyner coach Wayne Turner said. “We just tend to do some crazy things on offense at times, but we’re pretty tough on the defensive side of the ball.”

Playing without injured quarterback Travis Jones, the Rams used seven ball carriers in the first half. Jones, who left last week’s game with a bruised knee and was in street clothes at Red Bank, is expected back when Tyner hosts Central next week.

Tyner (5-2, 4-0) drove inside Red Bank’s 10-yard line twice in the first half but turned the ball over on downs both times. Midway through the second quarter, a high snap sailed over Lions quarterback Hagen Wilkey’s head and rolled backward 31 yards before Tyner’s Dameian Suttles scooped it up and carried it 36 yards for the game’s first touchdown.
