Have you ever been amazed by how differently some artists see the same subject? Are you curious about the different ways painters begin their paintings?
Learn how one family handles the competition, when Townsend Atelier hosts Art Throwdown, a friendly painting competition between family members Daud Akhriev, Timur Akhriev and Melissa Hefferlin.
The family feud will be held Friday, April 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the gallery in the Arts Building, 301 E. 11th St. It is part of the free closing reception marking the end of their exhibition, “Paper.”
Peggy Townsend says previous Art Throwdowns have been fun, popular events at the studio.
On Friday, the three accomplished artists will each paint a portrait from a live model in a three-hour painting demonstration. Husband and wife, Daud Akhriev and Melissa Hefferlin, and their son will go brush to brush in this family competition.
Guests get to watch as each artist starts, carries and refines a portrait to its completion.
“Questions, comments and hollering are all recommended from the audience. The paintings created during the demonstration will be auctioned at the end of the night,” Townsend says.
Drinks will be available and guests may bring a snack or sack dinner.
“Paper” features more than 50 of the Hefferlin-Akhriev works on paper including gouache, watercolor, oil, drawings, pastels, limited-edition etchings and linoleum prints signed and numbered by the artists. Some work is framed, and some is loose for custom framing after purchase. Prices range to accommodate all budgets.
