Multiple units of Chattanooga firefighters responded to fires at the Standard-Coosa-Thatcher building Saturday night and early Sunday morning, according to a news release.

Crews were dispatched to the first incident at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, where they found heavy smoke pouring from the top floor of the building.

The fire was extinguished shortly before 2 a.m. with no injuries reported. The fire was initiated by homeless people attempting to stay warm inside of the vacant building, fire officials said.

At around 9 a.m., Chattanooga firefighters were called back to the abandoned building where they found several small fires in the basement of the structure. No injuries have been reported and officials believe the second fire is a separate incident from the first, the news release states.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the second fire incident.

The building suffered extensive fire damage back in 2016, when crews worked for several hours to extinguish a two-alarm fire.
