Pedal to the metal
The return of one of the area’s winningest coaches does not automatically mean immediate success for South Pittsburg.
But it will mean a noticeable difference in discipline, attitude and effort, and those are the foundations Vic Grider intends to re-establish at his alma mater.
No player embodies that identity better than running back/linebacker Chase Blevins, one of only two seniors. At 5-foot-8, 155 pounds, Blevins has played with a chip on his shoulder throughout his career, a trait he believes will carry over to his young teammates.
“I feel like we’re being underestimated and we all have a lot to prove,” Blevins said. “As a senior, I want to set an example.”
Despite reaching the second round of last year’s playoffs, the Pirates lost six games, three by a touchdown or less. Roster numbers and community support began to wane until Grider returned as coach and immediately changed the team’s approach and the excitement in the community.
“We still won some games last year, but it wasn’t the same,” Blevins said. “But from the first day of workouts, through spring practice and especially now that we’re close to the first game, everybody found out we have to be more serious with Coach Grider. He’s a lot more intense and aggressive in how he coaches us. He’s in your face when you mess up, and that makes us play harder and focus more.
“He pushes everybody to their fullest potential, so you don’t have a choice but to get better every day. We’re a completely different team than we have been for a couple of years, and I think people will see that.”

Pump the brakes: This is not the same program that was a perennial region champion and state-title contender. The Pirates fell off significantly last year and have a ways to go to being the bullies of the Valley again. There are only two seniors on the roster, and the nonregion schedule is brutal, with trips to annual powers Marion County, Boyd-Buchanan and three games against 3A competition.

Route ’15: When Grider announced he would return as head coach, some felt that would be enough to fix the cracks in the armor. But the numbers, experience and talent aren’t back up to the standards of his first coaching stint, and while the Pirates should be more disciplined and physical, expect a lot of games to be decided late, one way or another.

Taking the wheel: Chase Blevins is one of only two returning Pirates who have played under Grider, and he knows the type of effort it will take to become a leader. The 5-foot-8, 155-pounder makes up for a lack of size with quickness and toughness.

Cruise control: The biggest team strength is attitude, because the Pirates are hungry to turn things around. The number of players in the program is lower than usual and there isn’t as much proven talent, but there is speed and a lot of desire to prove themselves. After being embarrassed last year, they will play with determination all season.

Backseat driver: An opposing coach said of South Pittsburg, “They lost their identity a little bit last year, so Coach Grider will have to reassert his style to make them what they used to be. I don’t think the talent is where it was, so they’re kind of the unknown in 1A.”
