This month’s featured artist at CATS Gallery in Crossville, Tenn., is Scott Eatherly, who took up artistic pursuits after a debilitating brain hemorrhage in 2000.
Eatherly was employed at Oak Ridge National Laboratories, and he and wife Janie were building a house at Lake Tansi when his health took a nosedive.
After six months in intensive care, three hospital stays, nine surgeries and monumental medical expenses, he was finally well enough to choose the next phase of his life: a class in chair caning at the John C. Campbell Folk School.
He has since begun using the caning material to make baskets, using skills he learned at Arrowmount.
His signature design is an onion shape with fringe on top.
