Good morning and welcome to School Report.
This Thursday, the Tennessee Department of Education will visit Hamilton County for a public town hall to receive input on student-based funding strategies.
The visit will be the sixth of eight town halls around the state where the department has been gathering information in review of the current 30-year-old education funding formula, the Basic Education Plan.
At last week’s town hall in Memphis, families and educators named special education, materials and staff members like nurses, social workers and school counselors as areas in need of more funding, according to Chalkbeat.
Educators addressed similar topics, like increasing the number of school counselors and providing more school options, during the first town hall in Sumner County last week, according to the Tennessean.
Gov. Bill Lee announced a review of the BEP in early October, along with funding subcommittees that include Hamilton County educators and elected officials in the following weeks.
Community members can attend the Hamilton County town hall Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at The Howard School, 2500 Market St., or stream the event on Facebook.
