United Airlines will start nonstop flights Thursday from Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport to Washington Dulles International Airport.

“With the addition of nonstop service to Dulles Airport, we are providing connection to countless international destinations and opening up our region to even more commerce,” said Terry Hart, president of the Chattanooga Airport.

With two daily departures from both cities, United passengers can make business and other trips to the nation’s capital.

“United is offering our customers in the Chattanooga area more choice in their travels,” said Omar Idris, managing director of the United Airlines Washington Dulles hub.

Flights will be on 50-seat Embraer RJ 50 aircraft.

CBL closing local mall common areas on Thanksgiving Day

CBL Properties will close the common areas at Hamilton Place and Northgate malls in Chattanooga for Thanksgiving Day.

The shopping center company said it plans to open the common areas in those malls and others in its nationwide portfolio at 6 a.m. the following day, Black Friday, Nov. 23. It’s the third consecutive year CBL has closed its malls on Thanksgiving Day.

Department stores, movie theaters, restaurants and retailers with exterior mall entrances will have the option to open their stores on Thursday. However, access to mall common areas will be restricted until 6 a.m. on Friday. Patrons should check their local center’s website for more specific information, according to CBL.

“Thanksgiving and Black Friday are two great American traditions,” said Stephen Lebovitz, chief executive officer of Chattanooga-based CBL Properties. “By continuing the practice of closing our centers on Thanksgiving this year, we are ensuring our customers and employees have the opportunity to celebrate to the fullest – spending Thanksgiving with family and friends and then waking up early to spend Black Friday with us.”

Barnes & Noble reviewing offers to sell company

NEW YORK – The board of Barnes & Noble said it is reviewing the company’s future after several parties expressed interest in buying it.

The company said Wednesday its board appointed a special committee to review the offers.

One of the interested parties is its founder and chairman, Leonard Riggio, who is credited with turning Barnes & Noble into a superstore.

The bookseller has long been struggling with increasing competition from Amazon and has been reducing staff over the last year.

According to FactSet, Riggio owns 19 percent of the company and is its largest shareholder. He says he will vote in favor of any transaction recommended by the committee.

The New York-based company also says it’s adopting a shareholder rights plan after noticing an unidentified party rapidly accumulating its stock.
