A woman was killed Monday after speeding through a school zone, leading authorities on a chase, hitting multiple police vehicles and opening fire on officers, according to the GBI.

The dramatic string of events started when Cave Springs police tried to pull Kimberly McCann over for speeding. When she did not stop, police followed, GBI spokesman Greg Ramey said.

Georgia State Patrol troopers, Floyd County police officers and Floyd County sheriff’s deputies joined the pursuit.

McCann, 55, of Cedartown, crashed before shooting at officers, Ramey said.

“Four officers returned fire,” he said in a statement. “McCann died as a result of her injuries.”

No officers were injured.

The GBI identified them as Floyd County police Officers Leonard Whaley and Chris Shelley, Floyd County sheriff’s Deputy Devin Womack and GSP Trooper Jamie Mitchell.

The GBI is continuing to investigate the incident, the 11th officer-involved shooting in the past 11 days and the 34th overall in 2018.
