The UTC Master Chorale will present a free concert of musical genres ranging from Baroque to jazz tonight, June 23, at Second Presbyterian Church.

The Master Chorale is a summer chorus comprising University of Tennessee at Chattanooga undergraduate and graduate students, joined by experienced singers from Chattanooga and surrounding communities. The chorale is conducted by Dr. Kevin Ford, UTC director of choral activities.

David Friberg, organist at Second Presbyterian Church and accompanist at UTC, also accompanies the Master Chorale. Other musicians on tonight’s program are pianist Johan Sentana and saxophonist Clint Schmidt.

In addition to Ford, the chorus will be conducted by graduate student conductors Michael Ake, band director at McCallie School, and Gregory Lindquist, band and orchestra director at Collegedale Academy.

The concert will include two of the coronation anthems of G.F. Handel, two works by contemporary British composer Will Todd, who is also a jazz pianist, and a piece by British jazz pianist George Shearing.

Sentana and Schmidt will be featured on Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo’s “Evening Prayer.” Friberg will be featured on Prelude in G by French composer Théodore Dubois.

Ford says the concert’s major work – “and what is likely a Chattanooga premier – is “Requiem per Coro Misto” by Czech composer Zdenk Luká.

“This five-part, a cappella work ranges from beautiful tranquility to one of the more violent settings of the ‘Dies Irae’ or ‘Day of Wrath’ text in the literature,” Ford says.

Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be collected to support the endowed Glenn Draper Choral Music Scholarship for students at UTC.
