‘Up North,’ the taxpayers ‘fund’ the best schools

My recent migration to Chattanooga has introduced me to the fact that schools in this part of the country are funded differently than up North. In Columbus, Ohio, where I am from, there are about eight school districts within the city limits. Each gets a basic amount of funding from the state, but the rest is gathered from property taxes in the local school district that are voted on in each local district.

But here is the wake-up call for Hamilton County: You get what you pay for. Up North, people go to great lengths to move to the well-funded school districts, and they vote for higher taxes over and over again!

Why? Because their kids get a better education in the well-funded districts. They get into better colleges, and they get better jobs. It’s pretty simple, really.
