The Chattanooga City Council has unanimously passed a resolution denouncing a proposed state law that would prevent cities from entering any sort of agreement with municipal employee unions.

Councilman Chris Anderson announced the resolution Thursday, calling state Senate Bill 123 an attack on municipal employees across the state.

Sen. Brian Kelsey, R-Germantown, drafted the bill and said last week he was trying to help cities.

“If Tennessee wants to truly be a right-to-work state, we are going to have to apply those principles all the way down to the local level,” Kelsey said. “This bill will help cities to control their budget issues by giving them the ability to negotiate directly with employees.”

Anderson, and others in the council call the effort an over reach of state government.
