Did you know?
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show gets its name from a long-gone hotel in Manhattan.Sporting gentlemen used to meet in the hotel’s bar to drink and brag about their shooting accomplishments. Eventually, they formed a club and bought a training area and kennel. They kept their dogs there and hired a trainer. When they couldn’t agree on a name for their new club, someone finally suggested they name it after their favorite bar. The idea was unanimously selected.Source: Westminster Kennel Club website

Chattanoogan Anne Bolus will judge the Non-Sporting group at the 141st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City next week.
The competition for top dog at the Westminster show will take place Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 13-14, at Madison Square Garden. This is Bolus’ second assignment at a Westminster show, according to a news release from the Westminster Kennel Club.
Bolus was born in England and settled in the United States in the early 1960s. She has bred more than 50 Irish setter champions, including Best in Show, Specialty and Group winners. She was a professional dog handler for many years before serving as an American Kennel Club executive field representative from 1984 to 2003.
She has judged national contests for Irish setters, English setters, Sussex spaniels, Labrador retrievers and vizslas, which are Hungarian-originated retrievers. She has also been invited to judge in several foreign countries. Her husband, David, is also a dog show judge.
Of the seven groups judged in kennel club shows, she currently judges Sporting, Hound, Toy and Non-Sporting groups, which requires extensive knowledge about numerous breeds. There are 20 breeds just within the Non-Sporting group.
At Westminster, judging of breeds will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Breed winners within the Hound, Herding, Toy and Non-Sporting groups will be judged between 8 and 11 p.m. Monday night.
Winners of breeds within the Sporting, Working and Terrier groups will be judged Tuesday beginning at 8 p.m. before the seven group winners compete for Best in Show to conclude the broadcast.
