Storm sends East Ridge scrambling

The thunderstorm that moved through the area this evening sent fire and police scrambling in East Ridge.

East Ridge fire and rescue and police responded to 4809 Madonna Ave. and 529 S. St. Marks on reports of trees that had fallen into homes, said public safety spokesman Erik Hopkins. In both cases, residents were able to escape without injury he said.

Police and fire personnel also were called to the 400 block of Scruggs Road when a driver, trying to pass through swiftly moving water, became trapped, he said. The driver was able to leave her vehicle and walked to safety, Hopkins said.

Reports of another vehicle in the water sent crews to the area of Frawley Road and Martha Avenue, he said.

Officials also received numerous calls of downed power lines and trees, traffic signal failures, lightning strikes and flash flooding, Hopkins said. City crews now are working to remove hazards and repair traffic signals.

The storm also struck while voting polls were open, temporarily disrupting at least two precincts, he said.
