As ‘our’ war in Iraq ends (?)

Many Americans thought it would be a “short” war when the United States invaded Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein from power, and head off what many feared was his threat of weapons of mass destruction.

Americans “won” quickly, with “shock and awe.” That was 2003 – but unfortunately that was not the “end” of the Iraq War. Troubles continued, and casualties, too.

But now, the U.S. commander, Gen. Ray Odierno, has said, “We have met our goal.”

Things are quieter now, despite some terrorist activity and bombings, causing some military and civilian casualties. But American troops are down to about 50,000, and it is hoped they will not be in combat. Plans are for further U.S. “draw-down.”

But as former New York Yankee Yogi Berra memorably said in quite a different context, “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

The American involvement in Iraq “ain’t over” till all American troops may come home safely.

But even then, the war won’t be satisfactorily “over” unless responsible, elected Iraqi officials and their military forces are able to hold and pacify that unfortunate and complex ancient country.

When all Americans finally come home, what then?

Many Americans have suffered death, wounds and great sacrifices, and billions of dollars have been spent for challenging and idealistic purposes.
