Former Baylor School star Brooke Pancake will be competing in the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open, which begins Thursday at Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club.

Pancake, who is married to former Soddy-Daisy and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Derek Rende – her caddie this week – is scheduled to begin her opening round at 7:18 a.m. off No. 1.

Waffle House signed Pancake, a three-time All-American, to an endorsement deal earlier this year. The online version of USA Today picked up on the story Tuesday, nearly six months after the Times Free Press had her announcement.

Pancake, who rolled in the winning putt to give Alabama a national championship in 2012, will be playing in her fourth U.S. Open as a professional.

Holmes tied for sixth

Aubree Jones of Covington leads after the first round of the 52nd annual Tennessee Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship. She shot a 3-under-par 69 at Foxland Harbor Golf and Country Club in Gallatin, which gives her a five-shot lead over McMinnville’s Hannah Powell and three others.

Katherine Holmes, a Signal Mountain resident and Baylor School golfer, is tied for sixth at 75. Ashley Gilliam and Savannah Quick of Manchester shot 76 and 77, and Winchester’s Malia Stovall also shot 77. Charleston’s Rheagan Hall had the next best score of a Chattanooga-area participant at 84, which has her tied for 29th.

Cleveland’s Kyndall Shamblin and Crossville’s Kelsee Neely are 10th and 11th in the 10-14 division at 86 and 87.

CGCC women sweep

Chattanooga Golf & Country Club’s Blakesly Warren, Lauren Johnson, Sarah Dolmovich and Georgia McCravey won the Chattanooga Women’s Golf Association team championship Tuesday at Lookout Mountain with a combined 6-under 66 in the “A” flight, and two other CGCC teams won the “B” and “C” titles. Ryan Kopet, Kristy Snow, Carol Burns and Janet Horton were the “B” best with a 65, and Pat Wilson, Sharon Tucker, Lesley Dunn and Patty Jones competed the sweep with a 75.

Lee, Dalton State four honored

Lee University’s Madison Alexander, Sam Burrus, Bernadette Little and Caroline Moore all are 2015 WGCA All-American Scholars, which requires a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Senior Alexander’s GPA is 3.99, while the other three’s are 3.88, 3.81 and 3.53, respectively.

Dalton State also had four of its women golfers honored: Ashley McDonald from Chickamauga, Rachel Rebne from Ringgold, Caroline Griffin and Taylor Marie Griner.

Area aces

Jonathan Xoinis is barely a teenager but has a hole-in-one. The 13-year-old Xoinis holed a 140-yard tee shot on No. 3 at Black Creek Club on June 12 while playing with Grant Burks. He used a 6 iron.

Bobby Eaton recorded the second hole-in-one of his life on June 30 at Valleybrook. His ace came on No. 5, playing 140 yards, with an 8 iron. Jim Miller and Paul Brock were witnesses.

Walter Stamper made his second hole-in-one on July 1 at Moccasin Bend with his son, Bill Stamper, watching. The ace came on No. 3, playing 149 yards, with a 6 iron.
