Richt puts long-snapper Frix on scholarship

Redshirt sophomore Ty Frix has maintained a pretty simple objective as long-snapper for the Georgia Bulldogs.

“I like staying out of the spotlight,” he said.

Frix gained some attention Monday by being awarded a scholarship by coach Mark Richt. The 6-foot, 206-pound former Calhoun High valedictorian, a biomedical engineering major, started last season and maintained the top spot this spring.

He worked last year with All-America punter and Ray Guy Award winner Drew Butler, as well as All-Southeastern Conference kicker and Lou Groza Award finalist Blair Walsh. His lone blemish was sending a snap over Butler’s head during the win over South Carolina, which resulted in a safety, but Richt believes the get-off time with Frix and Butler was as quick as any he could remember.

“Ty has done an outstanding job with all our snapping duties,” Richt said. “He’s been an instrumental part of one of the top punt and field-goal/extra-point teams in the country. Ty is well deserving, and we’re very pleased to award him the scholarship.”

Frix is a second-generation snapper for the Bulldogs. His father, Dr. Mitch Frix, was Georgia’s starting snapper in 1981 and ’82 and was a member of three league championship teams, the ’80 national title team and three Sugar Bowl teams.
