Alternative bluegrass; newgrass; jamgrass. Whatever you want to call it, a progressive spin on traditional bluegrass has become a longstanding sub-genre that fits somewhere in between bluegrass and Americana, and it survives really without any rules. It started in the early 1970s with bands like New Grass Revival, and the torch has been passed over the years from the likes of Leftover Salmon, Railroad Earth and Trampled by Turtles.
But if there is ever a question of bluegrass’s influence outside of Tennessee, Kentucky or even Colorado, then look no further than Greensky Bluegrass, a progressive bluegrass band based out of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Performing a style of bluegrass that is pleasing enough for the traditionalist but high-energy and hip enough for the younger generation, Greensky Bluegrass have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the music scene. Formed in 2000, the band now has nine albums under their belt, with the latest, Shouted, Written Down & Quoted, released in September 2016.
Like most upbeat bluegrass bands, Greensky Bluegrass is known for their live performances. Early in their career, they won the best band competition at the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and they are no strangers to Chattanooga, having performed at the 2014 Southern Brewers Festival and most recently at the 2016 3 Sisters Bluegrass Festival. And even though one of their newest hit songs is named Past My Prime, it is safe to say that the band is still currently in their prime, as they are scheduled to headline Track 29 on Sunday, March 12.
Before the festival season erupts, this will be the perfect chance to see how this band keeps the spirit of live bluegrass music alive in a venue setting; even if it is by their own rules.
