Christabel and the Jons are based out of Knoxville, TNJazz typically embodies sophistication. Even though it is very similar in its arrangement and somewhat a distant cousin, bluegrass and folk music sometimes tend to be stereotyped as “hillbilly.” And swing music is a mixture of jazz and folk in an upbeat fashion that has been known to influence high-energy dancing.
When you mix all of these wonderful sounds together, you get a unique sound that Knoxville band Christabel and the Jons has been perfecting for nearly a decade. Led by the sultry vocals of Christa DeCicco, the band seems to be on a mission to reinvent the sounds of the Roaring Twenties, while adding its own twist on the region’s Appalachian sound. Representing wonderful multi-instrumentalists, a live performance from the band may include guitars, drums, upright bass, violin, trumpet, mandolin and possibly even another surprise instrument or two.

Not only do they resurrect a style of music that sometimes is forgotten, DeCicco’s nostalgic lyrics and the band’s sense of style and presentation help make live shows not only about the creative music they play, but also about bringing a true feel to their performance that helps make the band even more unique. They have taken their polished show from coast to coast, performing in small clubs, theaters and major festivals. Chattanooga is lucky enough to get live performances from this up-and-coming barrier-breaking band at least twice a year, and they seemed to have found a home away from home at JJ’s Bohemia downtown. Catch them live there on Friday, July 13 before they outgrow this local underground music haven and make it to the bigger stage.
