Redskins’ McCoy improving, on pace to start Sunday

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) – Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden says Colt McCoy has had a “positive” recovery from a neck injury and is on pace to start this week against the New York Giants.

Gruden said McCoy “looked fine” at practice Thursday. McCoy will seek a final clearance at a doctor’s appointment Friday, but the coach says he expects McCoy to get the go-ahead to play.

McCoy sprained his neck when he was sacked in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 27-0 loss to the St. Louis Rams.

Gruden said Robert Griffin III will start if McCoy can’t.

Gruden could have gone with Griffin anyway, but the coach said McCoy is “in the lead” among the three quarterbacks who have started for the Redskins this season.

The Redskins are 3-10 and have lost five straight.
