Vols add one football commitment, lose another from 2017 class

KNOXVILLE – Tennessee rang in the start of the NCAA-mandated dead period for football recruiting Monday with a couple of changes to its 2017 class.

The Volunteers gained one commitment and lost another to remain at 25 commitments.

Defensive end Deandre Johnson from Miami announced his commitment to Tennessee on Monday morning, less than a day after reopening his recruitment. The former Mississippi State pledge took his official visit to Knoxville for the Kentucky game last month. He had committed to the Bulldogs in late July.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pounder plans to enroll at Tennessee next month after helping his Southridge High School team win Florida’s Class 8A state championship with seven tackles Saturday in Orlando.

Johnson, who hosted Tennessee defensive coordinator Bob Shoop and defensive line coach Steve Stripling on Sunday night, recorded 15 sacks this season playing primarily as a defensive tackle. The three-star prospect’s scholarship offer list includes Auburn, South Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland and California.
