The Mountain Arts Community Center is hosting vocal instructor Trish Ferrell Wileman’s “So, You Think You Can’t Sing?” Vocal Confidence Workshop Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wileman has previously offered the workshop to a variety of adults of different ages and musical backgrounds at music festivals such as the Ohio Valley Gathering in Kentucky. She said the experience of teaching the class was so much fun, she wanted to also offer it to the community at the MACC, where she teaches private voice lessons.

“So often, people play an instrument and want to sing and play but feel less confident about singing than playing an instrument,” she said, as to what gave her the idea for the workshop. “To have confidence in singing, you have to have some technique to build on.”

Typically when someone tells her he or she cannot sing, Wileman said it is because someone told that person during childhood that he or she has a bad voice and should not sing.

“I want people to find a way to overcome that,” she said. Wileman has fun activities planned to teach students the basic techniques of singing, some of which involve props that may seem a bit silly, she said. “When you attach something physical and fun to something that you’re learning, then you remember it longer.”

The cost of the workshop is $30. Wileman noted that considering that her private lessons cost $25 per half hour, the workshop is a good value.

Wileman has been teaching voice lessons for 20 years and previously worked with the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera. She is currently the assistant director of music at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church and recently graduated from UTC with a master’s in choral conducting.

To register for the workshop, contact Wileman at 941-330-5547 or tfwileman@gmail.com. The MACC is at 809 Kentucky Ave. and can be reached at 886-1959.
