Last October Fort Oglethorpe’s Walmart Neighborhood Market supported four Catoosa County elementary schools with a bus transportation grant to attend School Days at the 6th Cavalry Museum.
“Receiving this Walmart Foundation grant allowed four Title One schools to attend,” Chris McKeever, museum director, said. “The teachers tell us every year how important it is to receive the bus transportation grant. Without it their school couldn’t attend.”
The students experienced World War II and life at the Army Post at Fort Oglethorpe by visiting five learning stations with authentic World War II living historians presenting the program.
“All our historians and volunteers take vacation days so they can be here with the students,” she said. “The Barkleys drive from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and Molly Cooper drives from Ohio. They are very dedicated, and their programs are outstanding.”
