ATLANTA (AP) – Authorities say a handcuffed man seeking to avoid arrest died after jumping from a third-floor window of a downtown Atlanta building onto the ground below.

Spokeswoman Tiffany Russell says the man reported Tuesday to a pretrial services program of Atlanta’s Fulton County Superior Court when authorities determined he had a gun.

She says he jumped from the window because officers planned to arrest him. Russell said the man, who wasn’t immediately identified, died later at a hospital.

A hole could be seen in the window where he exited the building.

The pretrial services program gathers information on people who face criminal charges and are booked into jail. It also monitors defendants out on bond while awaiting trial.

Russell said she didn’t immediately have information on the man’s case.
