Another local swimmer, Addison Smith of the Baylor Swim Club, qualified Friday in Auburn, Alabama, for an event in the United States Olympic team trials next summer in Omaha, Nebraska. Smith, already included in the Olympic trials in the women’s 400-meter freestyle, won the 200 free in a trials-qualifying time of 2:00.86 at Auburn’s Richard Quick Invitational long-course meet that includes more than 500 participants from throughout the Southeast. That time also broke Kristen Vredeveld’s eight-year-old BSC record. Earlier Friday, McCallie GPS Aquatics graduate Luke Massey qualified for the 2020 U.S. trials in the men’s 100 breaststroke. Smith is one of four Baylor Swim Club representatives set for the Olympic trials. The others are Cecilia Porter in the women’s 100 breast, Ellie Waldrep in the women’s 100 backstroke and current Florida Gators swimmer Trey Freeman in the men’s 200 free and 400 free.

Golf

» Two local amateur golfers finished second in the Tennessee Senior (55-older) and Super Senior (65-plus) match play tournaments that ended Friday at Bear Trace at Harrison Bay. Scott Patton of Signal Mountain lost 2-and-1 in the Senior Match Play final to Tim Jackson of the Memphis area, who has a record 22 Tennessee Golf Association championships, after beating 18-time TGA winner Danny Green from Jackson by the same score. Tony Green of Kingsport secured his fourth TGA title with a 5-and-4 Super Senior victory over five-time state winner Neil Spitalny of Chattanooga. Tony Green also won the Super Senior division, by six strokes, this month in the Tennessee PGA Senior State Open in Crossville. Jackson has won four Senior Match Plays in the five years he’s been eligible. The man who won that year – 2016, also at Harrison Bay – was Pikeville’s Bob Rice, Jackson’s 2-and-1 semifinal victim Friday morning. “I wasn’t that familiar with Scott’s game, but he’s an extremely tough match-play competitor,” Jackson said about his final opponent in a TGA release Saturday. “He’s a good putter; he’s going to be in every hole and not really give you a lot. He’s got the formula for success.” Jackson clearly does: He has three USGA national titles and has played on two U.S. Walker Cup teams.

Fishing

» Matt Arey of Shelby, North Carolina, moved up from second place to first Saturday in the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Elite tournament on Lake Guntersville. His five-bass limit totaling 21 pounds, 6 ounces gave him 44 pounds for two days in the event based at Scottsboro’s Goose Pond Colony. Brandon Lester of Fayetteville, Tennessee, is second at 43-7 with Ray Hanselman Jr. of Del Rio, Texas, third at 40-3. Winchester’s Gary Clouse is 31st at 32-7. The top 35 go back out on the lake today, trying to make the top 10 for Monday’s championship round.
