Bechtel joins B&W to build small reactors, including Oak Ridge

America’s biggest engineering firm is joining with Babcock and Wilcox Nuclear Energy to build smaller nuclear reactors for the U.S. and foreign markets.

Bechtel Power Corp., is forming an alliance with B&W, which over the past two years has been developing a 125-megawatt nuclear plant design – about 10 percent the size of a nuclear reactor at the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant near Chattanooga.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is working with the alliance and could locate one of the mini-reactors on a site in Oak Ridge, although no decision for such a plant has yet been made.
