Four arts organizations are partnering to present Carl Orff’s cantata “Carmina Burana” in two performances at Chattanooga State Community College, 4501 Amnicola Highway.

The first concert is Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Humanities Building auditorium. The second will be Friday, March 1, at 7:30. Both performances are free.

The performances will feature Christine Hassevoort, soprano; Andrew Skoog, tenor; Brett Hyberger, baritone; and more than 100 area choral singers. Dancers from Chattanooga Ballet will interpret the work while Choral Arts of Chattanooga and the choirs from Chattanooga State and Heritage High School perform the music.

Carmina means songs in Latin, while Burana is the Latinized form of Bueren, a Benedictine monastery in Bavaria. Together, they translate as “Songs of Bueren,” a collection of early 13th-century songs and poems discovered in Bueren in 1803.

First published in 1847, Orff came across the texts that had been translated into English in 1934. With the help of law student and Latin scholar Michael Hofmann, Orff chose 24 songs that he set to music creating a “scenic cantata.”
